The maintenance of society depends largely on the production of food for their survival, and the soil appears as a fundamental raw material for it to take place. The loss of soil through erosion directly affects food production and consequently the quality of rivers, and management of this loss, is configured as a base to mitigate existing problems and to propose appropriate solutions. The aim of this study was to identify characteristics and properties of the physical environment of the area of the Sub-basin of córrego Laranja Doce, right bank, in the west of São Paulo - Brazil, with a view to mapping of erosion and its impact on rivers, focused planning geared to rural areas, supported by qualitative and quantitative criteria and to assess the current stage of use and soil degradation. The study mapped the presence of erosive processes in 76.6% of the study area and 35.2% of the length of water bodies in silting situation requiring immediate recovery of 35.36% of permanent preservation areas and still the concern that one should have, because 66.88% of the area has a high degree of susceptibility to erosion. The survey and analysis of the physical environment through remote sensing images, use 50 cm of spatial resolution (true color), proved to be of great relevance to a preliminary diagnosis of environmental quality.
